ABOUT US

Helping Children

Goals: The goals of Living Hope High School are coordinated with the four areas of focus of the United Methodist Church.

The Begining: In 2009, retired West Virginia teacher Marilyn Uhl followed a calling from God to start a school in Kenya for orphaned and impoverished children. With only four students in a rented shed, she used her own retirement savings to begin the work. The early days were difficult, and students slept on the floor, but the school endured through faith and God’s provision. The first class graduated in 2013. With support from her sister Helen, along with generous donors and sponsors, the school was able to purchase land in Bungoma, Kenya, and grow to serve 88 students with 13 Kenyan teachers and 9 local staff.
Develop Christian Leaders: Living Hope High School maintains high academic standards, and students remain enrolled only if they pass Kenya’s yearly standardized tests. All students take Christian education classes taught by a local minister for all four years and attend evening prayer services. The school choir has performed for local schools, officials, and student guardians and is being developed into a young Christian performing choir, serving as a positive witness for Christ in the community.

ABOUT US

Spreading Love

Ministry with the Poor: All students come from extreme poverty and are unable to afford secondary school. They now have the chance to graduate from an accredited high school, live safely in boarding facilities where they are protected from hunger, and be housed in new cottages sheltered from the elements. Every student and faculty member receives vaccinations, including for typhoid, and comprehensive testing and treatment for life-threatening diseases, ensuring their health and well-being.

Mission statement: As Christians, we are called to care for and support others. James 1:27 instructs us to help orphans in their troubles, and we are committed to supporting the students of Living Hope High School with our prayers, love, time, and financial resources. By putting Jesus’ word into action, we can give these children hope, a bright future, and the opportunity to witness their faith in Christ. Our mission is to empower students through spiritual values, raise awareness of human rights, break cycles of poverty and AIDS, combat child abuse and labor, and prevent malnutrition and deadly diseases.

Start New Congregations and Revitalize Existing: Campus buildings serve as spaces for local congregational worship and fellowship every week. Our students, both male and female, regularly share testimonies and preach about Christ during daily devotions. We actively encourage students to pursue ministry, and several graduates have gone on to study at Bible colleges. Our choir ministry also serves as a vibrant witness, using music to share their Christian faith with the wider community.
